What are fears?

Fears and phobias are things that frighten us.

Usually our first response to a fear was programmed into us years ago. Maybe you nearly fell and are now afraid of heights. Maybe someone close to you screamed when they saw a spider and you learned that you were supposed to be afraid of these creatures.

No matter how irrational your fears appear to other people, they're certainly very real for you.

How can hypnosis help conquer fears?

We'll probably use an NLP technique to get over your fear. NLP is simply a faster version of hypnosis, which means that near enough any fear or phobia can be removed in just one session.

The technique is called the Rewind Technique.

You'll become relaxed and I'll then get you to imagine that you're sat in a cinema.

On the screen will be the point in time after you first experienced your fear. The film will be in black and white and you'll run it backwards in your head until you get to the point before you had your phobia.

We'll do this a few times, adding some extra tricks that will see you cracking a smile and maybe even laughing out loud.

This technique is great - it works every time because it actually erases the pathways or shortcuts your brain takes when it next encounters that fear or phobia. So you can then deal with your worries normally the next time they happen.

And it works for any fear or phobia: flying; heights; spiders; public speaking; absolutely any fear.

What if I can't visualise things in my head?

It doesn't matter.

The "film" will be real enough, even if you only get a sense of something happening.

Actually, you probably don't want to be able to "see" these visions too clearly, otherwise you could have difficulty distinguishing imagination and real life!

How will I know the treatment has worked for me?

Depending on what we're treating, we may test you immediately.

So, if you're scared of heights, it's only a few minutes to the Regent Arcade car park - looking out from the top of that is a good test.

If you're scared of flying, that's obviously more difficult to test on the spot. But you'll already know by the way your mind reacts.
